When Rob and Jess, the directors of Loughlin Furniture, considered what they wanted in their family home, they knew it had to connect with the landscape of the nearby beach and bushland while still feel welcoming on the inside.

To start, they found a 70s beachside home in Norah Head that had been loaded with multiple additions and lean-tos. Working closely with Fabric Architecture Studio and Hudson Lane Projects, the couple found a way to renovate the Central Coast home into a more modern, light-filled space while also showing off their company’s skills in custom joinery.

Another part of the renovation was the removal of the existing additions to better capture the northern light and send it deep into the interior, although the architects utilised as much of the existing structure as possible. The light brings a more dynamic quality to the warmth and texture of the natural material palettes, creating a stronger sense of comfort and familiarity. It also enhances the feeling of indoor-outdoor living, since the interior finishes and textures allude to the home’s coastal exterior palette of masonry and shiplap.
