In South Yarra, the Darling Apartment by Blair Smith Architecture started as a small scale kitchen renovation for a retiring couple that eventually expanded into a full upgrade of a dated interior. The new layout took advantage of the full potential of this penthouse apartment and extended the floor plan farther into the west-facing balcony of the bedrooms at the rear. This move then gave more space for the reconfiguring and refinement of key areas like the master bedroom, kitchen, and living room.
One major design element was the use of American Oak joinery and natural stone to create a cohesive warm and modern feeling throughout the rooms. Used in the kitchen and bathrooms, products from our Circa collection beautifully echo the style with a Brushed Nickel finish. The fixtures’ minimalist radial forms also present an elegant juxtaposition to the hexagonal tiling in the master bathroom.
The delicate cabinetry details are also found in the built-in furniture and in the two timber screens that can divide the kitchen from the living area, if needed. Another sliding panel, although in black powder coat, is found beside the fireplace hiding the television and other entertainment equipment. Among many other elements, these carefully considered design moments work together to create an experience of easy city living, a beautiful backdrop to the needs of everyday life.
