OUR STORY

HANDED DOWN FROM
GENERATION TO GENERATION

Dutchman Nicolaas Johannes van Putten arrived in Australia in 1960 with business ambitions and a talent for watchmaking. Nick turned his hand to jewellery, developing a precision process to create earrings, which he exported worldwide. In the 1990s he diversified into tap making, employing 55 staff.

Today Sussex is in the capable and caring hands of Nick’s family. For the new Sussex generation customisation and the expression of individual tastes are exciting motivators for continued innovation. Yet while they have an eye to the future, they uphold Nick’s legacy of quality and precision.

Our precision ethos is a legacy of our founder. Today we’re still guided by his obsession for detail.

NO. 2

Craft

Care, patience and a tactile pleasure in the medium of metal are the hallmarks of our working methods.

NO. 3

Beauty

We believe the objects that fill our everyday lives should be works of art in themselves.

Manufacturing

WORLD-CLASS EXPERTISE

Sussex is a true, local industry with our own foundry and manufacturing workshop in Melbourne. We create our taps using rigorous methods that we pioneered and refined. Each of the six phases of our process is conducted with the closest care and attention.

PHASE 1

FOUNDRY

Our brass bars are created from the recycled brass shavings left over from our machining operations. As the only maker with an Australian foundry, we can melt and re-use this precious resource.

PHASE 2

A SOLID START

Starting with a solid block of brass, each piece is machined, polished and electroplated, then assembled in our Melbourne workshop. There’s a rigorous quality check at each step. Short cuts are not an option.

PHASE 3

MAN OR MACHINE

The two main parts of a tap are the tube and the rod. Our artisans meticulously craft each tube by hand. Meanwhile the rods are precision-machined with our high-tech CNC machines.

PHASE 4

POLISHED TO
PERFECTION

We polish our components by hand or robotics. Whether it’s a mirror finish or a brushed texture, the polishing is an art in itself.

PHASE 5

FINELY FINISHED

Our local manufacturing process allows you to integrate a choice of finishes. We can leave the tap as raw metal, electroplate an effect or finish it in paint.

PHASE 6

HAND AND EYE

Finally each piece is assembled by hand. Components are combined to custom specifications. Then the piece must pass the exacting eye of our inspectors. If it receives their signature, it’s ready for you.
